Presented by SFBATCO
Featuring a performance by Lorraine Hansberry Theatre
October 14 - 16, 2022

Brava Theater Center
2781 24th St, San Francisco

The New Roots Theatre Festival is a theatrical experience produced by The San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company (SFBATCO) featuring eight unique performances that celebrate the development of new work and centers BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ voices.

This year, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre is thrilled to present an excerpt from HALIE: The Mahalia Jackson Musical, a new work which celebrates the life of the gospel legend and Civil Rights activist. Guided by a strong religious calling, Jackson's gospel performances connected with audiences across the world while deeply connecting to both the struggles and joys of African Americans. Combining strong musical performances and a unique look onto her life, HALIE will both educate and enrapture audiences.

HALIE: The Mahalia Jackson Musical

"This is a necessary, historical, and empowering story, and it's on us to tell our stories, our historical accounts," says Lorraine Hansberry Theatre's Artistic Director Margo Hall. "Black history is slowly being removed from schools, and it is so important for us to make sure that does not happen- we can do this through our art"

Directed and co-written by Darryl V. Jones, the musical was originally written by Wendy E. Taylor and workshopped over the last decade. Taylor passed in 2019, entrusting Jones to continue developing this important story.

"This show feels like I'm honoring the legacy of Mahalia Jackson, Wendy Taylor, and all of my ancestors," Jones says. "Mahalia's story feels synonymous with all of the Black women in my family: my mother, my aunts, my grandmothers."

We are a not-for-profit theatre. DONATIONS and support are always appreciated.
