The New Roots Theatre Festival is a two day theatrical experience produced by The San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Company (SFBATCO) featuring eight unique performances that celebrate the resilience of the global community in the Bay Area.
Lorraine Hansberry Theatre will present an excerpt of In the Evening by the Moonlight, an original work by Margo Hall and Traci Tolmaire that explores the friendships between Lorraine Hansberry, Nina Simone and James Baldwin.
TICKET INFORMATION
The New Roots Theatre Festival program consists of four (4) unique Performance Blocks. Each Block contains two (2) short performances that are thematically linked. Audiences can choose between a 2-Block Package ($30) or a 4-Block Package ($50).
In the Evening by the Moonlight will perform in BLOCK C: Black Excellence, alongside Shakespeare’s Complete Works (Abridged)[Revised] presented by African American Shakespeare Co.

IN THE EVENING BY THE MOONLIGHT
Set in 1963 during at the height of the Civil Rights Movement, In the Evening by the Moonlight follows the three close friends- playwright and activist Lorraine Hansberry, the incomparable musician Nina Simone, and the enigmatic writer James Baldwin as they share a magical, rowdy evening of drinking, debating, and celebrating the hope of revolution. This original play by co-creators Margo Hall and Traci Tolmaire takes an intimate look into the lives of Lorraine, Jimmy, and Nina as Jimmy has recently returned from Paris, and Nina and Lorraine plan for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) benefit concert at Carnegie Hall after the assassination of Medgar Evers in 1963.
