A terrific opportunity to learn more about our trailblazing namesake, Lorraine Hansberry.  Our Artistic Director Margo Hall will introduce a talk hosted by U.C. Berkeley’s Patrick Finelli Keynote Speaker Series, in which Georgetown University professor Soyica Colbert will speak about Hansberry’s life at the intersection of politics and art. Just in time for the election, this podcast episode shares Martin Luther King J.R.’s timeless and powerful 1957 speech “Give us the ballot” in which King beseeches the U.S. government to ensure Black People’s voting rights.  Actor and former LHT Artistic Director Steven Anthony Jones is host of Black Voices Past & Present, spotlighting speeches and literature that resists white supremacy. Inspired by the Black Lives Matter Movement, this podcast brings some of the most poignant voices of Black history directly to listener’s ears, unfiltered and without talking head commentary.

This bold new play by MacArthur Genius grant recipient Dominique Morisseau (Ain't Too Proud, Sunset Baby, Detroit '67, Skeleton Crew) examines the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, and the crises in relations between men and women of all classes. Moving, lyrical, and bold, Blood at the Root probes the complexities of race, individual freedoms, and what justice means when biases have been normalized. Directed by former LHT Artistic Director Darryl V. Jones, Blood at the Root is presented by Cal State University East Bay as a virtual Zoom play.
