President Barack Obama
and First Lady Michelle Obama
see August Wilson play on Broadway
When the president and first lady went to New York for dinner and a Broadway show, they chose to see the late August Wilson’s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone, a thinking man’s drama, and one of the few that Lorraine Hansberry Theatre has chosen to produce more than once.
Aside from the loads of free publicity that the presidential visit will bring to the 1040-seat Belasco Theatre, the choice sends a valuable message about the arts in America. As Frank Rizzo (no relation to the late Philadelphia mayor) points out in his blog, Joe Turner, like all of Wilson’s plays, was developed not in the commercial Broadway houses, but in the world of non-profit theatre. The National Endowment for the Arts and countless foundations and corporations, both public and private, funded Joe Turner’s journey to Broadway. Without not-for-profit theatre companies, many of our nation’s best known playwrights would have languished in obscurity.
People who never heard of August Wilson are suddenly interested in seeing his works. Of course, Lorraine Hansberry Theatre has produced or been associated with all of them. Once the public becomes more familiar with Wilson’s canon, can the works of Lynn Nottage and Lydia Diamond be far behind?
