Award Winning Lorraine Hansberry Theatre Announces 2011 - 2012 Season

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Lorraine Hansberry Theatre’s (LHT) artistic director, Steven Anthony Jones is excited to announce LHT’s 2011–2012 31st season, “Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed & Something Blue.”

The season begins in October with a special program of two one-act plays, Almost Nothing by Marcos Barbosa and Day of Absence by Douglas Turner Ward. In December, LHT will unveil their NEW holiday musical, Rejoice! Then in February they will bring to the stage Joe Penhall’s Blue/Orange. We will close out the season in May with Pearl Cleage’s Blues for an Alabama Sky. Lorraine Hansberry Theatre’s venue for the season will be announced soon.

10/11/11 to 11/20/11
Two One-Act Plays:
Almost Nothing
by Marcos Barbosa
Day of Absence
by Douglas Turner Ward

Guilt, tension, fear, and suspense all combine to lead us to an unexpected ending in Marcos Barbosa’s Almost Nothing. Barbosa gets under his characters skin with great insight. This chilling short will live in the memory for a considerable time.

Winner of the coveted Vernon Rice and Obie Awards, Day of Absence is a clever satire that recounts the uproarious circumstances which occur when those we rely on inexplicably disappear. Almost Nothing / Day of Absence, two one-act plays that will provoke laughter and thought.

12/4/11 to 12/31/11
Rejoice!
by Ron Stacker Thompson & Sydney Etter

A musical retelling of the Christmas Story.

2/5/12 to 3/18/12
Blue/Orange
by Joe Penhall

Who is right, who is wrong? Who is sane, who is crazy? A tale of race, madness and power that takes place in a mental institution.

4/1/12 to 5/12/12
Blues for an Alabama Sky
by Pearl Cleage

This is a love story of a sort, set in the Harlem Renaissance, rich with history, culture, music and dreams. It takes a dramatic turn when religion, lies, and sexual preferences collide.
